How Sedation Treatment Helps in Dentistry?
Sedation is to help patients to relieve their anxiety and fear of dental treatment. Sedation dentistry uses medications (Laughing gas OR oral medication) that bring you to a deeply relaxed state. You are still awake and respond and talk to dental team. Throughout the dental procedure, your vital signs are monitored. You will recall little or none of your stay in the dental chair. You will someone to help you to bring to the appointment and back.
We offer the following sedation treatment:
Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Gas (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas is inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. Dentist controls the amount of gas you may require during the procedure. The gas provides relaxation during the procedure, but you are still conscious. Effect of gas wear off quickly.
Oral Sedation
Oral medication, usually a pill is given prior to the procedure. It makes you relaxed and drowsy and alleviates your anxiety. You will need someone to assist you to drive to and back to the appointment
How Safe is Sedation Dentistry?
While sedation dentistry is considered a safe procedure, however as with any form of sedation, there is always some risk. Therefore, your dental team will conduct a comprehensive review of the medical history before scheduling the appointment. Some medical conditions like COPD, obstructive sleep apnea and obesity may impact sedation and will be addressed. Vital signs are continuously monitored during the dental procedure and oxygen and reversal drugs are available on site should a complication arise.
Is Local Anesthesia Still Used with Sedation Dentistry?
YES. While sedation treatment relieves the anxiety and dental fear, local anesthesia is still used with most dental procedures. Local anesthesia helps to numb (freeze) the gums and the tissue and thus reduces/eliminates pain during the procedure.
