Crowns
We offer Dental Care, not just dental treatments.
Do I need a Crown?
A crown is a cap(cover) to restore the shape, size and function of the tooth and makes it stronger. Yes. Your dentist may recommend a crown if you have:
- a weak tooth due to cracks or excessive wearing
- a very large cavity that cannot be restored by filling alone
- had root canal treatment — the crown will protect the restored tooth
- a discolored or crooked tooth and want to improve your smile
Materials for making Crown
Several materials may be used for fabricating a crown. These include: composite resin, ceramics, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or metal alloys. The material is often color blended to match with your natural tooth. Your dentist will recommend the material of the crown based on factors such as:
- the color or shade of the tooth
- the position of the gum tissue
- the amount of tooth that shows when you smile
- the tooth’s location and function
- your preference
Stages in getting a Crown
It usually takes 2 dental visits to complete the treatment
First Appointment:
Your dentist prepares the tooth by removing the decay and some outer portion of the tooth (usually enamel) to make space to fit the crown. Sometimes, a core built-up may be required for the crown retention. Thereafter, a mold (impression) of the prepared tooth is taken, and send to lab for crown fabrication. Your dentist will place a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth from hot and cold sensitivity before the appointment is concluded.
Second Appointment:
Once your crown is ready, your dental team will schedule the second appointment. Your dentist will check for the margins, occlusion and proximal contact with nearby teeth.
If everything is as per standard of care, your dentist will cement the crown.
Routine Care for the Crown:
Like natural teeth, crowns can break OR the tooth under the crown may still get decay. To prevent damage or cavities to your crown:
- Brush your teeth twice a day and use dental floss between your teeth every day.
- Avoid chewing hard foods such as candies, nuts and ice, or other hard objects, such as pencils, if you have tooth-colored crowns.
- Schedule regular dental appointments for exams and professional teeth cleanings.
