Dentures
Why should I get a Denture?
- To replace the multiple missing teeth and thus improve smile and optimal biting function
- To replace the decayed unsavable teeth with severe damage that cause continuous pain
Types of Dentures
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are useful to replace few missing teeth and where a bridge can not be made. They can be removed for cleaning and at night
A partial denture
Complete Dentures
Are helpful to restore biting function when all natural teeth are missing. They are held in place by suction created by mouth tissues. There are 2 types of complete dentures: immediate dentures and conventional dentures.
A full upper denture
Immediate Dentures
They are made before your teeth are removed. After teeth extraction they are inserted in the mouth.
Benefits:
You are not without teeth during the healing period, which can take up to 6 months. Thus, you maintain the esthetics and function
Additional Work
Since bone and gums will shrink after extraction and remodel, immediate dentures will need relining (at an additional cost) in next 6 months for a proper fit.
Conventional Dentures
Are fabricated after teeth have been extracted and the gums and jaw tissues have healed.
Immediate Dentures and Overdentures
These dentures help if traditional dentures are very uncomfortable or if only a few natural teeth left. Overdentures are fitted over the roots of natural teeth and either rest on these or on dental implants, if there are no natural teeth to fit over.
Implant-Supported Dentures
These dentures get their support from the dental implants. A dental implant is a permanent fixture that is anchored to the jawbone and can be used to replace any number of teeth. They are very successful the lower jaw as compared to the upper jaw. both.
Taking Care of the Dentures:
- Should be cleaned every day just like natural teeth since plaque and tartar built up can cause stains, bad breath and gum problems
- Always remove dentures overnight so that oral tissues can rest and breath
- Store your dentures in a closed container filled with water during night
- If you see any cracks in the denture, consult your dentist to fix it.
- If they are becoming loose, they may need relining/rebasing to ensure the proper fit
